Edakkal Amma church is situated at Edakkal Village. It is a road side church we can see
this church while climbing to Edakkal Caves, Wayanad.
Edakkal
Amma church is open church on the foot of the Edakkal cave where we can see the
Mother Mary's carvings on the stone. Mother Mary is known as Edakkal Amma and
there is a big cross. The pictures of Mother Mary, Jesus Christ, Adam and Eve
Forbidden fruit etc., are carved on the rocks. There is stone deployed by the St.
George Malankara Catholic Church Kuppakkolly which says this church name as Edakkal
Amma church.
Secularism seen in Edakkal Amma church - The Hindu Symbol 'Om' is engraved on a pillar.
Edakkal Caves are the natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal. Inside the caves we can see the pictorial writings believed to date to at least 6,000 BCE, from the Neolithic man, indicating the presence of a prehistoric civilization or settlement in this region. The Stone Age carvings of Edakkal are rare and are the only known examples from south India.
