Grace Cathedral San Francisco
Grace Cathedral is an Episcopal cathedral on Nob Hill, San
Francisco, California. It is the cathedral church of the Episcopal Diocese of
California. SFO Grace Cathedral is an Episcopal church and the 3rd largest
Episcopal cathedral in the United States.
The cathedral is famed for its mosaics by Jan Henryk De
Rosen, a replica of Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, two labyrinths, varied
stained glass windows, Keith Haring AIDS Chapel altarpiece, and medieval and
contemporary furnishings, as well as its forty-four bell carillon, three
organs, and choirs.
In the center of the Nob Hill district of San Francisco
stands this beautiful old church which began its construction in 1928. Over the
decades it took to make this cathedral many different artists and sculptors
came to help it along. It was finished in 1968 and stands as a beautiful work
of art that is as amazing on the inside as it is on the out. This gothic style church, constructed in
1964, continues to be one of the most elegant religious buildings in the
country.
The front of the Grace Cathedral is similar to that of Notre
Dame in Paris. Its interior, which is illuminated by the blue lights projected
from the stained glass windows, dazzles you with its simplicity; its tall
hollow ceilings with pointed arches give a great sense of open space. The
atmosphere in the cathedral is even more special thanks to the organ that has
been in operation there since 1934.
