Thirukkadaiyur Sri Amrithakateswarar - Abirami Temple

Thirukadaiyur Shiva Temple is situated in a small town of Thirukadaiyur, near Seerkazhi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This 11th century shrine is considered to be one of the 8 Veeratta Stalams of Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga is believed to be a manifestation of the celestial nectar that was obtained during the churning of milky ocean by the Devas and Asuras.

The Shiva lingam is a Swayambhu (Self manifested) lingam. The presiding Deity of this Thirukkadayur temple is Shri Amirthalingeswara and the consort is shri Abirami. The temple is praised in the Devaram hymns by three Saints Appar, Sundarar and Thirugnanasambandar. This is the 47th Shiva temple on the southern bank of river Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Significance of the Temple

Among the Eight Veeratanam (Avatharams) of Lord Shiva this is the Eighth Veeratanam.
This temple is particularly associated with Shiva saving his devotee Markendeya from death and the tale of saint Abirami Pattar.

Thirukadaiyur is the place where Lord Shiva has bestowed immortality to Sri Maarkandaya and best owed with Ever Sixteen Age (16).  Lord Shiva (Mirthunjayamoorthi) killed the God Yaksha (Yaman) and saved his votary’s life. He has also bestowed yama with the Absolution for the sake of the Goddess Bhumadevi.
