Coit Tower
Coit Memorial Tower in San Francisco
Coit Tower, also known as the Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, is a 210-foot (64 m) tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California.
The tower, in the city's Pioneer Park, was built in 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco; at her death in 1929 Coit left one-third of her estate to the city for civic beautification. The tower was proposed in 1931 as an appropriate use of Coit's gift. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008.
The tower, which stands atop Telegraph Hill in San Francisco's Pioneer Park, offers panoramic views of San Francisco including "crooked" Lombard Street, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Twin Peaks, Aquatic Park, Pier 39, the Financial District, the Ferry Building, as well as San Francisco Bay itself including Angel Island, Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges.
It serves as a directional marker for people lost in the mazes of city streets, but with its rich history and its excellent viewpoint, Coit Tower offers much more than just a way to find out where you are in the city.
Once you have reached the top of Coit Tower, you will see that the structure affords a three hundred and sixty degree view of the city. Unobstructed by taller buildings as a result of a city ordinance, you can go up here to get a view of both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge with a picturesque look at the bay between them. Walking around to the other side of Coit Tower, you can see the peak of the Transamerica Building, the beauty of the cityscape and the curves of Lombard Street.
