Peyto Lake in Banff National Park
Peyto Lake in Banff National Park
Peyto Lake is a world-famous, glacier-fed lake located in Banff National Park, Alberta, celebrated for its surreal, neon-turquoise water and its unique shape that perfectly resembles the head of a wolf or a fox. Situated at an elevation of 1,880 meters (6,168 feet) along the scenic Icefields Parkway, it is best viewed from above at Bow Summit which is half mile walk from the parking lot.
Water So Blue - The intense color is a natural phenomenon caused by glacial rock flour. As the massive Peyto Glacier melts during the warm summer months, it grinds the underlying basin rock into a fine powder. This powder remains suspended in the lake water, perfectly refracting sunlight to bounce back a vivid teal and blue spectrum.
The lake is
cradled inside a dramatic valley of the Waputik Range. When looking down from
the viewing deck, the scenery is framed by three dominant mountains:
Caldron Peak:
Anchoring the mountain wall to the left.
Peyto Peak:
Standing prominently above the valley.
Mount Jimmy
Simpson: Dominating the rugged skyline to the right
Hike to the
Viewpoint & Panoramic Overlook : Reaching the main wooden viewing platform
requires a short, 0.7-kilometer (0.4-mile one-way) walk from the lower parking
lot. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes each way along a well-paved trail with a
brief uphill incline.
