Pozhichalur Agatheeswarar Temple

Chennai Pozhichalur Sri Saneeswarar Temple

Pozhichalur is about 3 kms from Pallaavaram Railway station off the road towards Kundrathur. It has an ancient Shiva temple belonging to Chozha period. The main deity here is Sri Agatheeswarar and Goddess Sri Aanandhavalli.

This ancient temple is one among the Navagraha temples in Chennai region (Thondai Mandalam) dedicated to Lord Sri Saneeswara Bhagavan. The main deity, Sri Agatheeswarar is seen facing the east and Goddess Sri Aanandhavalli facing south. The temple is facing north and does not have Rajagopuram.

According to legend, Lord Shiva directed sage Agasthiyar to go towards south to balance the earth during his wedding at Mount Kailash. As per the God’s direction, Sage Agasthiyar came down to the southern part to balance the weight of the earth. While he was on his way to Podhigai hills, he stayed here for many years and worshipped Lord Shiva, a Swayambhu (self evolved) Lingam at this place. This temple had been renovated during Chozha period. The sanctum is built in Gajabrishta shape (also called Thoongaanai Maadam) shape. The style of construction with the gaja-brashta-vimana (resembling the shape of an elephant's behind).

Sri Saneeswara Bhagavan is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here. As Sri Saneeswara had been giving ill effects to people, he had gained Dhosham out of it. Sri Saneeswara Bhagavan, wanting to be relieved of his dhoshams, prayed Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva asked Sri Sani Bhagavan to come to this place and worship Him. As directed, Sri Sani Bhagavan came to this place, created a pond called ‘Sani Theertham’ and worshipped Lord Shiva and got relieved of his problems.

Hence, Sri Sani Bhagavan here is believed to be Mangala Saneeswarar with no dhoshams or ill effects. People having problems because of Sani (Saturn), worship here to reduce the ill effects. This place is also called ‘Vada Thirunallaaru’. Sri Sani Bhagavan is facing west towards the main deity in the sanctum. This temple is also a Parihaara Sthalam for Raahu and Kethu.

Marundeeswarar Temple is a temple dedicated to Hindu deity Shiva, located in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai adjacent to the beach of Bay of Bengal. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where the three of the most revered Nayanars (Saivite Saints), Appar and Tirugnana Sambandar have glorified the temple with their verses during the 7th-8th century.

Significance of the temple:
v  Thiruvanmiyur is the 25th of the 32 Tevara Stalams in the Tondai region of South India.
v  The temple is revered in the verses of Thevaram, the 7th century saivite canonical work by the two saint poets namely, Appar and Sambanthar.
v  Lord taught Sage Agasthya the medicinal qualities of herbals and the medicines for various diseases, hence is also praised as Marundeeswarar – Marundhu in Tamil means medicine and Eeaswara God – God of Medicines.
v  The Sthala Vriksham of this temple is Vanni.
v  Kamadenu worshipped and so He is known as Palvanna nadhar.
v  The temple has been widely expanded by Chola kings during the 11th century. The temple has two seven tiered gateway towers, a huge tank, with the overall temple area covering 1 acre.

Marundeeswarar is known so because he imparted sage Agastya on curative properties of various herbs and plants. Since then the Marundeeswarar temple has been a place of worship for people with diseases and various problems with their health. It is said that even The Sage Valmiki, who wrote The Ramayana, came here to The Marundeeswarar temple to worship Shiva. Sage Valmiki was said to be blessed here. After this incident, this place was to be known as Thiruvalmikiyur, the name gradually changed to Thiruvanmiyur. The lingam for which Hanuman performed pooja, The lingam(meenakshi sundareswarar) that cured the curse of Indra, the Lingam for which Saint Bharadwaja performed pooja are present here. According to popular legend, when the king Mahabali was about to grant Vamana, an incarnation of Vishnu, gifts of land as part of Yagna Dhana, Sukracharya, the preceptor of the Asuras, tried to stop him as he suspected foul play. But Bali was insistent that he cannot stop Dhaanam to a young Brahmachari Brahmin. Sukrayacharya, then changed his form to that of a bee and went into the nozzle of the Kamandala blocking water flow. Lord Vamana on seeing this, pricked the nozzle with a dharba grass, which blinded Sukracharya . Sage Sukracharya worshipped lord Shiva at this place in Mylapore and got his eyesight back.

The temple was originally located closer to the sea shore and was relocated to the current site at 1640 AD. It was then built in 1678. Shivaji, the Maratha warrior and the founder of the Hindawi-Swarajya in the 17th century, had worshiped in this temple incognito on 3 October 1667. It is believed that a fierce form of Goddess was held in worship earlier and that this form was replaced with the shanta swaroopa (calm posture) form of Goddess Kamakshi.
