Lone Rock is a solitary rock in Wahweap Bay in Lake Powell in Glen Canyon Recreation Area less than 10 miles (16 km) from Glen Canyon Dam. It is located within Kane County, Utah, United States. 

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (shortened to Glen Canyon NRA or GCNRA) is a recreation and conservation unit of the National Park Service (USA) that encompasses the area around Lake Powell and lower Cataract Canyon in Utah and Arizona, covering 1,254,429 acres (5,076 km2) of mostly desert. 

The recreation area borders Capitol Reef National Park and Canyonlands National Park on the north, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument on the west, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and the northeasternmost reaches of Grand Canyon National Park on the southwest, and the Navajo Nation on the southeast. 

Lone Rock is a massive, monolithic rock, the Lone Rock, dominates your view of Lake Powell. This free-standing sandstone rock is the namesake of one of the most popular beaches in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The popularity is due largely to the fact that it is one of the few spots that you can drive directly to the water’s edge and camp on the shoreline.

Lone Rock Beach Campground is located on Utah Highway 89, two miles south of Big Water, Utah, and 12 miles north of Page, Arizona.

The Glen Canyon Dam Overlook (sometimes called “The White House”) is a simple down-and-back to a viewpoint on the rim of Glen Canyon. It generally doesn’t take more than 20 minutes to hike down, look at the river, and hike back. It’s part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The hike to Glen Canyon Dam overlook is a quick and scenic 20 minutes. This short hike produces views of the Colorado River and Lake Powell. The trail down to the overlook is less than a mile. At the base of the well-marked trail is a viewing area. Directly upstream from the viewing area lays Glen Canyon Dam, one of the largest dams in the United States, and the reason for Lake Powell’s existence.

Glen Canyon Dam

Glen Canyon Dam was built to provide hydroelectricity and to regulate river flow. It was completed in 1966 after ten years of around the clock construction. The dam is one of the largest in the country with a length of 1,560 feet and a height of 587 feet.

The base of the dam is 300 feet wide. Until the adjacent Glen Canyon Bridge was completed, it took a 192 mile drive to reach the other side. The bridge spans 1,271 feet and is about 700 feet above the Colorado River. The Glen Canyon Dam separates the Colorado River from Lake Powell. The terrain on this hike is uneven and rocky. The overlook is located on Scenic View Drive off of highway 89. Glen Canyon Dam is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

The Glen Canyon Dam Overlook is located in Page, Arizona on the south side of the Colorado River downstream from Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell. From the overlook parking lot, it's a relatively easy hike that takes about 20 minutes for the round trip hike.

Thiruvanthipuram Devanathaswamy Perumal Temple

Devanathaswamy temple (also called Thiruvaheendrapuram Kovil) in Thiruvanthipuram, a village in the outskirts of Cuddalore in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD.

It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Devanathaswamy and his consort Lakshmi as Hemabhujavalli. Though the presiding deity is Devanathaswamy, the temple is also known for Hayagriva, the horse faced avatar of Vishnu. The temple is the only historical temple in South India to have a shrine of Hayagriva.

Significance of the temple:

Ø  The temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon, by Thirumangai Azhwar in eleven hymns.

Ø  The temple is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples.

Ø  The Utsavar Murthy at this temple is called Moovaraagiya Oruvan, said to be a manifestation of Vishnu, Brahmma and Shiva and Thiru Mangai Azhvaar refers to the Lord as Moovaraagiya Oruvan in his praise in the Periya Thirumozhi.

Ø  The temple is located on the foothills of Outshadagiri, a small hill, which houses the temple of Hayagriva.

Ø  The river Kedilam, located on the other side of the temple flows from south to north and is locally called Uttaravahini

Ø  The temple houses the images of other deities like Pallikonda Perumal, Andal, AdiKesava Perumal, Azhwars, Hanumar and Garuda.

Ø  The temple tank is called as Sesha Theertham. Devotees drop salt, pepper, milk and jaggery into the well for relief from various ailments and skin diseases.

The temple in its current form is believed to have been built during the Medieval Cholas, with later expansion from Pandyas, Hoysala Empire and Vijayanagara Empire. The temple has fifty inscriptions from Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120), Vikrama Chola (1118–1135), Rajaraja Chola III (1216–1256), Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan (1251–1268), Vikrama Pandya, Vira Pandya III, Vijayanagar king Achyuta Deva Raya (1529–1542 CE) and Koperunjinga.

Devanathaswamy is believed to have appeared to Adisesha (the sacred serpent of Vishnu), sage Markandeya and Hindu god Indra. Six daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the chariot festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Chittirai (March–April), is the most prominent. The rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower has five tiers and raises to a height of 60 ft (18 m).

Tiruvanthipuram temple is the only historical temple in South India to house an image of Hayagriva, an avatar of Vishnu with horse face. Two iniquitous horses, named Madhu and Haitaba, are believed to have taken the Vedas away from the world. Brahma sought the help of Vishnu who propitiated in the form of Hayagriva.

Hayagriva is believed to be the god of knowledge and wisdom, who is believed to have restored the Vedas to Brahma. Hayagriva is also called Hayavadhana. Vedanta Desikar has eulogized Hayagriva in his works. Many people reach here to perform Aksharabhyasam (the ceremony conducted for commencing education of a child).

Down the hill, Devanathaswamy temple is one of the Divya Desam among 108 Divya Desam. The presiding deity is Lord Devanatha Perumal and Thayar (Goddess) is Hemambjavalli.

The great Sri Vaishnava Guru Swami Vedanta Desika reached here as a human incarnation of the Lord's Ghanta (bell) who would attain fulfilment in his penance carried out on the Hill. When he was about 20 years old and had mastered all Sastras, he came to this place, worshipped Sri Hayagriva at the hill, prayed Garuda who appeared before him and initiated him in Hayagriva Upasana which helped Desika attain religious knowledge to its greatest depths. Swami Desikan spent nearly 40 years of his illustrious life in this Divya Desam. To this day, the house in which he lived (Desikan Thirumaaligai) can be visited when one comes to Thiruvahindrapuram.

Hayagriva, also spelt Hayagreeva,  is a horse-headed avatar of the Supreme God Vishnu in Hinduism. In Sanskrit, Hayagriva means haya=Horse, griva=Neck.

In Hinduism, Hayagriva is also considered an avatar of Vishnu. He is worshipped as the God of knowledge and wisdom, with a human body and a horse's head, brilliant white in color, with white garments and seated on a white lotus. Symbolically, the story represents the triumph of pure knowledge, guided by the hand of God, over the demonic forces of passion and darkness.
