Sri Siva Vishnu Temple (SSVT) located in Lanham, Maryland, providing a place for Hindus to worship through religious, cultural and educational activities. The temple is about 12 miles away from Washington D.C

The actual Lanham Siva Vishnu Temple construction began in 1988 and has incorporated the Mayan, Pallava, Vijayanagara, Kerala and the South Canara styles of temple architecture. Sri Siva Vishnu Temple houses seventeen Sannidhis with several deities and were consecrated between the years of 1990 and 1995. The Temple Architecture was done by Dr. V. Ganapathi Stapathi.

Sri Siva: The linga brought from River Narmada is the representation of Sri Ramanatha Swamy of Rameswaram. It is the belief  that Sri Rama worshiped Siva in Rameswaram.

Sri Vishnu: The yoga nidra form represents Ananthapadmanabha of Thiruvanandapurum. This form of Vishnu is being represented outside India for the first time. The majesty and beauty of this form of Vishnu is a sight to behold. Another form of Sri Vishnu ( standing ) was consecrated . This is the famous Sri Venkateswara or Balaji of Thirupathi.

The Murugan Temple of North America (MTNA) is the first temple in the United States that is dedicated to the Hindu deity Murugan. The temple is located in Lanham, Maryland, about 15 miles (24 km) from Washington, D.C.

Conceived in the 1980s and opened in 1999, MTNA celebrates all Hindu and Tamil festivals, holidays and special occasions. The main sannidhi at Lanham temple is for Murugan (Karthikeya) with Valli Devasena. There are four other sannidhis, for Vinayaka (Ganesha), Siva, Meenakshi and Palani Aandavar.

The Hindu Temple and Cultural Society of USA Inc. (HTCS) was established in September of 1989. Our Temple was designed by Indian Temple Architects (Sthapati) according to ancient Indian Temple building codes and was inaugurated (Kumbabhishekam) in 1998.


A Temple or Devalaya is a place of worship. Deva means God and Alaya is House. Several smaller Temples or Sannidhanams are structured within the main Temple. A traditional Hindu Temple is built based on the Agamas, which are the Holy Scriptures on architecture. Agamas also provide guidelines for the conduct of worship (prayer).



The Sri Venkateswara Temple (Balaji Temple) is set in a nice location. The idol of Lord Venkateswara is so beautiful , and looks very similar to the main idol at Tirupati. The temple also has several other Hindu deities.

On the Independence day, July 4, 1976, the Bhoomi Pooja was performed. The organization of pooja and celebration was undertaken under the guidance of Sri Satguru Sant Keshavadas and Dr. T. K. Venkateswaran, Professor of Hindu studies at the University of Detroit.

Under the guidance of Sant Keshavadas, Brahmacharini Pavitraji and Acharya Sampat Kumar, the ground breaking ceremonies were performed on June 1, 1980.

The formal inauguration took place on July 19, 1981 by Swami Chinmayananda and Satguru Keshavadas. Another milestone was achieved on November 19th and 20th, 1983 with the installation of deities, Sri Lakshmi Narayana,Sri Ganesh and Sri Hanuman under the guidance of Sri Janaki Rama Sastry of Raja Rameshwari Peetham and Swami Alamlokananda of Vivekananda Monastery & Retreat at Ganges, Michigan.
