Namakkal is also known as Namagiri . It is now becoming a very important centre all over India for egg production, truck building and education, though Namakkal is synonymous with Lord Anjaneya to the people of Tamilnadu.

Sri Aanjaneya in the temple is 18 feet tall and graces with a Japamala in hand and a sword in the waist.  The eyes of the idol, in constant guard and respect, are fixed – in a straight line- at the lotus feet of Sri Laksmi Narasimha at the hill temple while Hanuman’s legs are firmly fixed on the earth. The super imposing figure of Anjaneya is left open; the sky is the roof. People offer ‘vadai malai’ and flowers to Lord Anjaneya.

The place where Parvathi devi grew to adulthood as Bharatha Maharshi's daughter is within the town of Kuttalam. It is believed that Shiva arrived here for the marriage and the couple also departed from this place.  Lord Shiva is a swayambumurthi in the temple. As a token of His wedding event in this place, Lord Shiva had left His Sandals (Padukas) and the Uddhala tree that accompanied Him from Mount Kailas to offer Him shadow on the way.  As Lord Shiva’s marriage took place here, any obstacle in wedding proposals would vanish if the devotee prays here.

One Rudrasanma was proceeding to Kasi for salvation.  Lord Shiva wanted to make him understand that this place itself was equal to Kasi.  He called Gundodhara to stop his journey taking the form of a serpent.  When Gundodhara intercepted his journey as a snake, Rudrasanma chanted the Garuda mantra.  The snake fell down fainted.  Lord Shiva came their as a snake charmer.  Rudrasanma understood who the charmer was.  He fell at Lord’s feet.  Lord told the devotee that his wish could be realized from this place itself.

Indira the king of Devas desired to have Akalika, wife of sage Gautama.  To realize his illegal wish, he came to his Asram in the guise of the sage himself.  He also made a trick to send the sage out of the hermitage.  Akalika too, though knowing that the visitor was not her husband, yielded to Indira.  Meantime, the sage returned home and understood what was happening.  Indira immediately took the form of a cat and tried to escape. Angry Sage cursed Indira to have the female organ (Female Genital Organ) throughout his body.  He cursed Agalika to become a stone.  When Agalika begged the sage for relief, he said that her curse will end on the day when the feet of Lord Sri Rama touched her stone form.

Indira went to Brahmma and narrated his sad story and sought a remedy.  Lord Brahmma advised him to worship Lord Shiva in Kurumanakudi.  Indira had a dip in the spring and worshipped the Lord.  The Female Genital organ in the body changed into 1000 beautiful eyes which Lord accepted.  Hence, Lord is named Kan Ayiram (1000 eyes) Udayar.
